Keeping Feet Warm This Winter
Nov 03, 2022
We have been lucky with the milder weather so far, but we know winter will soon be here, especially as the shorter days set in.
With the colder weather we often find the body is warmer than our toes, you might be thinking "why is that?"
Well, the toes have a lot less fatty padding around them and most of the time have less layers of clothing than the rest of the body. Poor circulation can be the reason for cold toes too, this could be due to underlying health reasons.
Here are some tips that might be helpful this winter.
Socks
We have so many choices available to us and it can become very confusing. It's always best to wear as natural materials, these include bamboo, wool, cotton, socks etc. They allow your feet to breathe and keep your feet warm/cool.
Layers
Wearing layers means that warm air can be trapped between the layers and helps to keep your feet warm for longer. It would be more comfortable to wear thin layers rather than thick layers.
Thermal Insoles
Thermal insoles which have insulating properties form another layer away from the cold ground and help keep you warm. Ideally, natural materials are best.
Chilblains
Chilblains occur when extreme cold or heat affect the small blood vessels in our extremities (fingers/toes). Too much cold narrows the blood vessels in our toes causing stinging pain. Too much heat places strain on our small blood vessels leading to a burning sensation. Avoid placing the feet too close to radiators/hot water bottles.
Creams
With colder feet, the skin becomes dry and can crack especially around the heels; this is known as fissures. Applying cream to cracked/dry areas to your feet can help reduce painful fissures. A urea based cream will help heal the fissures quicker.
