A Podiatristā€™s Perspective on Prevention & Treatment of Bunions

Apr 15, 2025

As podiatrists at Foot Corner, we see firsthand the impact that bunions can have on people's daily lives—physically, emotionally, and even socially.

What is a Bunion?

A bunion, or hallux valgus, is a structural deformity at the base of the big toe. It forms when the first metatarsal bone drifts outward while the big toe angles inward toward the second toe. Over time, this misalignment causes a visible bump, often accompanied by pain, inflammation, and limited mobility.

This isn't just a cosmetic issue—bunions can affect your gait, your balance, and your quality of life. For many patients, walking becomes uncomfortable, and finding proper footwear becomes a daily challenge.

Far too often, bunions are normalised or brushed off as a minor nuisance—especially by women, who are disproportionately affected.

Common Causes and Risk Factors

Bunions often develop due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Some of the most common contributors include:

  • Genetics – Foot shape and biomechanics often run in families.

  • Footwear – Narrow, tight shoes or high heels can accelerate deformity progression.

  • Flat feet or abnormal gait – Biomechanical issues can strain the big toe joint.

  • Arthritis or ligament laxity – These conditions can weaken joint support.

If you’ve noticed changes in the shape of your foot or have persistent pain near your big toe, it’s important to schedule an evaluation sooner rather than later.

Treatment Options: From Conservative to Surgical

Every bunion is unique, and treatment should be tailored to each patient’s lifestyle, severity, and goals. Fortunately, there are multiple options available:

Conservative (Non-Surgical) Care

  • Footwear advice – Wide-toe shoes with proper arch support can drastically reduce pain.

  • Custom orthotics – These help correct biomechanical imbalances that cause or worsen bunions.

  • Padding and strapping – These can relieve pressure and improve alignment.

  • Activity modification & joint mobilisation – Especially useful in early or moderate stages.

Surgical Intervention

When conservative care no longer brings relief or the deformity is significantly impacting your quality of life, surgical options like bunionectomy, osteotomy, or Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction may be considered. Modern surgical techniques have improved recovery times and long-term outcomes dramatically.
